Single family consultation: Finding the right school for your child

I work with you and your child to identify the right school. In working with you individually, I personalize the school choice process to your particular needs. We collaborate in each step of the process as I assimilate your views, needs and desires and articulate them for you into the eventual schools that fit your child and your family. The process involves:

  • Uncovering your educational background, life values and views on how education in today’s changing world.

  • Discovering your child as a learner and a social being.

  • Combining your views on education and the uniqueness of your child into an articulation of your hopes and dreams for your child’s education.

  • Education on the different types of schools. Practical and logistical considerations including cost, transportation, community support. Complete directory of Seattle/Eastside schools including leading public schools.

  • Recommendations of 3-5 schools. Assistance in the application and admissions process based on a personalized school enrollment calendar.

  • Suggestions for how you can best support education at home so it complements the work done at the school and creates a space in which your child might find their deepest passions.

Mentoring and Tutoring

As a mentor, I create a learning space that draws on school curricula, learner’s questions and passions, real-life experiences, local and global community events, as starting points for learning explorations. Explorations begin with existing school curricula and expand to include relevant learner questions and real-life events. In the explorations, learners inquire, think critically, make connections and develop a well-considered independent perspective on content. As learners engage higher cognitive skills they also master fundamental academic skills in service of and in the context of life-centered content.

How is this different from usual tutoring?

Every tutor offers a unique learning experience. While it is not uncommon to see examples of tutoring that is singularly focused on learning academic content, my mentoring accomplishes academic goals while exploring broader questions that are relevant to the learner. I make content come alive based on the learner’s questions, passions and real-life events.
