The Seattle Center celebrates 50 years this year. As part of the celebrations, the month of August is dedicated to discussing education. A lecture, a series of films and public discussions are offered this month. See a complete listing of education events on Seattle Center's Next 50.

Catch a thought-provoking, education-related film every Wednesday night this month. This week watch Happy. A post-film discussion will include questions on the connection between happiness and education. I will be on the panel for this discussion.

In doing some background research on the topic, I found these answers to the question: What Makes People Happy?

  1. Family relationships: Intimacy, safety and connection in private relationships.

  2. Financial situation: This is especially important when money is hard to come by. The presence of money has a decreasing effect on happiness once basic sustenance is guaranteed. In fact, it is shown that in some of the most prosperous nations (UK, US), happiness levels have either flattened or lowered despite increased economic output.

  3. Work: Work that brings meaning, work that people can control and that contributes to society.

  4. Community and Friends: Living in communities that can be trusted

  5. Health

  6. Personal freedom: Living in peaceful societies, pursuing interests and having a say in shaping society

  7. Personal values: Being able to live an authentic life, that is true to yourself

Come out and watch the film, hang back afterwards to consider how education is related to happiness.
