Shoeshine boy aces IIT entrance

Get this – the son of a cobbler and rag-seamstress, aced the IIT entrance exam! The IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) is a world-renowned technological institute, rivaling MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). About 2000 students go to IIT every year to experience some of the most grueling and challenging technological education. Those that go through its 4-year program often go on to head large technological and other businesses around the world. IITians are commonly perceived as the cream of the intellectual crop from India.

And, a shoeshine boy, who spent his time shining shoe with his father, made it into IIT!

While some might ascribe his achievement to tough academic standards and test preparation materials, I see this as an act of intrinsic motivation. It is hard to even begin imagining the materially impoverished context of Abhishek Bhartiya's life. Despite all the odds, he aced the entrance. What could have compelled him other than some deep inner commitment and focus?
